Day Trip from Valencia: The Albufera Lake

A Half-Day Escape to Albufera: Nature, Paella & a Hint of Chocolate

Just 10 km south of Valencia, Albufera Natural Park offers a peaceful change of pace from city life. Known for its wide lagoon, rich birdlife, and surrounding rice fields, it’s one of the best day trips from Valencia and easy to reach on your own. But beyond the natural beauty, Albufera is also the birthplace of traditional Valencian paella and even holds a few sweet surprises along the way.

How to Get There

Getting to Albufera is easy, even without a car:

By bus: EMT Bus 24 runs from Valencia city centre to El Palmar. It’s affordable and fairly frequent – just check return times, especially on Sundays.

By bike: The flat route from Valencia makes for a scenic and leisurely ride (about 1 to 1.5 hours each way).

Exploring Albufera on Your Own

Albufera Natural Park spans over 20 square kilometres and includes walking trails, rice paddies, and Spain’s largest freshwater lagoon. It’s especially popular with birdwatchers and photographers, but just about anyone can enjoy the peaceful scenery.

Here’s how to spend a relaxed half-day in the area:

Enjoy lunch in El Palmar. This village at the heart of Albufera is known for its rice dishes. If you’re looking for the real deal, skip the seafood and try Valencian paella made with chicken, rabbit, and giant white beans or all i pebre, a rustic stew made from local eels.

Take a short boat ride on the lagoon. Local boatmen offer rides in traditional wooden boats. It’s a great way to see the landscape from the water, especially around midday when the lake is calm and quiet.

Walk or cycle the nature trails. The flat terrain makes for easy walking or cycling. Look out for egrets, herons, and even flamingos, depending on the season.

A Sweet Start (If You Know Where to Look)

If you’re exploring the area with a guide, you might even get to visit a small, family-run chocolate workshop in a nearby town where traditional treats are still made by hand and sampling is very much encouraged. It’s a local favourite and a stop I love including on my tours.

When to Visit

While many people head to Albufera for sunset photos, a daytime visit offers just as much magic with fewer crowds and more time to explore. Late morning to mid-afternoon is ideal: walk the trails, take a boat ride, enjoy a long lunch, then return to the city before the evening rush.

If you do stay for sunset, bring insect repellent – especially in warmer months.

Want to Skip the Planning?

If you’d rather not worry about transport, timing, or finding the best restaurant, I also offer small-group excursions to Albufera including a boat ride, a traditional lunch, and that chocolate stop I mentioned earlier.

But whether you go on your own or join a guided trip, Albufera is absolutely worth the visit.
